Surprise addition to England squad: Antonio?
since Welbeck is out. Antonio covers at least two positions. Better attacking right-back than Walker, also covers right-wing and possibly centre-right.

I can't remember seeing a player improve this much over the course of a season. He's a fantastic player and so effective. Wasted at the back, he must be a nightmare to defend against because he's so direct.

I have to hand it to you stoneman. What a prediction especially since Antonio did not get a first team start until the 12th of December against Stoke.

I still think as a Nation we are still way behind a lot of other countries and that gets highliighted time after time when we get to the tournament.

The last side we had that I thought was capable of winning something was the 2002 World Cup side.

Having watched Rose completely lose his head in the intense game v Chelsea you have to worry about his temperament and judgement. He and Walker are accidents waiting to happen for me and could see either or both going off at some point under pressure.
To me Rose, Bertrand & Cresswell are at a similar level now that Baines appears to have been dumped.
The first two have been assessed but when both were unavailable for the recent friendly Hodgson used the right back Clyne at left back. Conspiracy theorists might think he didn't want to open the door to Cresswell and give him the chance to embarrass him.

' He'd be OK in most of the qualifying games, but in a tournament against the likes of Germany, Spain, Argentina etc ........ ?? '

I feel even worse thinking of Danny Rose up against the European powerhouses like Argentina.

Cresswell isn't great defensively, but he is much better going forward than Rose, and there's nothing to choose between them going the other way. Rose was fucking appalling against the Dutch.

Re: Surprise addition to England squad: Antonio?
Given that one of the options ,Sterling, has been spectacularly awful all season and another Walcott has been ineffective on the rare occasions he has played Antonio SHOULD be ahead of them.
I can understand showing loyalty to players who have done it before but Sterling particularly has looked so lacking in confidence and so abysmal it would be cruel to pick him.
The impression I get is that Hodgson logged off as soon as England qualified and had his squad picked then.
Some of his certainties have got injured and others have been abysmal. For example he could end up basing his defence around the players of that defensive powerhouse Everton.

Antonio always seems to get his cross in, compare that to wingers like sterling or Jarvis and he should be a shoe in He is also a massive far post aerial threat and a decent defensive cover.

Of course he won't get in The England. Wot left the match before our he scored the other day.

Re: Surprise addition to England squad: Antonio?
To win major international competitions you have to take players in form if you do not have the best team, we do not have the best team and many who have won the euroes and World Cup did not either but they had teams of which players performed. We on other hand always take same old same old and fail year after year.
No doubt in my mind that Cresswell and Antonio are such players and Carrol would be my choice if he takes four strikers, there you have the three Hammers you need to win a trophy at the top.

Re: Surprise addition to England squad: Antonio?
I've never felt players like Noble & Cresswell are SO talented they should be in. Just that they are at least on a level with many many who have at least been given an opportunity.
Carroll is an acquired taste for a manager & given the numbers of other forwards around its up to the manager whether he thinks he needs what he brings. Which is unique amongst the options.

Antonio has been the interesting one for me. Allowing for all the injuries of others I think he has been head and shoulders above any other English right sided player this season.
I genuinely believe if he had had the same season at Man Utd he would have been in the last squad.

Cresswell is a top class player going forward, but as NORM has stated, he is not good enough defensively.

He'd be OK in most of the qualifying games, but in a tournament against the likes of Germany, Spain, Argentina etc ........ ??

Re: Surprise addition to England squad: Antonio?

Your argument seems to be that Cresswell and Noble aren't international quality. It's a common one and it's a load of shit to be honest and completely irrelevant.

How many Wales players are of 'international quality'? I'm gonna hazard a guess and say they're not just gonna play Gareth Bale on his own. If you think there are 2 or 3 left backs better and in more consistent form than Cresswell then fair enough, likewise Noble and 7 or 8 midfielders. 'International quality' doesn't come into unless you don't think we shouldn't go with a full squad.
